Author and activist Maya Angelou hopes for a time when Black History Month will no longer be needed to explain the contributions of African-Americans. “we want to reach a time when there won’t be Black History Month, when black history will be so integrated into American history that we study it along with every other history,” she said in an interview from her home in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Wednesday. “That’s the hope, and we have to continue to work until that is true, until that becomes a fact.”

In the meantime, she said, she will continue to put the history out there.

Angelou is hosting an hour-long syndicated radio special on the civil rights era that will air throughout this month on about 200 public radio stations across the country. her special features Grammy award-winning singer Mary J. Blige, Democratic Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young, economist and Bennett College President Julianne Malveaux, and professor Nikky Finney, winner of the 2011 National Book Award for poetry.

Angelou, 83, said she hopes the program sends a message that “the work of making our country more than it is today” is unfinished.

Black history IS indeed American history, so should we now protest Black History Month??

Whether you live in new Orleans, or elsewhere, Mardi Gras can be celebrated.

Considering present day Mardi Gras celebrations, it might surprise you to learn that the festival has religious roots. Festivities start in new Orleans each year on January 6, the Twelfth Night feast of the Epiphany, and the day it is believed the three kings first visited Jesus Christ. Mardi Gras, French for ‘Fat Tuesday’, is the day-long highlight of Mardi Gras. While Mardi Gras most certainly has pagan, pre-Christian origins, the Roman Catholic Church legitimized the festival as a brief celebration before Lent. Mardi Gras Day, a legal holiday in new Orleans, is set to occur 46 days (the 40 days of Lent plus six Sundays) before Easter, and can come as early as February 3 or as late as March 9.

The celebration of Mardi Gras included private masked balls, and random street masking, in the cities of Mobile, Alabama and new Orleans. By the 1820s, maskers on foot, and in decorated carriages, began to appear on fat Tuesday, and in 1837, the first documented procession took place in new Orleans, but it bore no resemblance to today’s carnival.

Just like a Mardi Gras Ball, your party should have a theme. each person can choose to be masked or unmasked, but bright colors, beads, and Jazz music is a must one popular suggestion for Mardi Gras parties outside of new Orleans, is to enlist the aid of someone artistically inclined to paint a large piece of plywood to coordinate with the Mardi Gras theme, where each couple can stand to have their photo taken as a gift and memento of the party, just like they do at the Mardi Gras balls in new Orleans

Decorating for your Mardi Gras Party is very easy. Strings of brightly colored lights (Christmas tree lights work well) plenty of glittery, colorful confetti, helium balloons will round out the Mardi Gras theme.

Serve traditional Mardi Gras foods and drinks like crawfish, seafood, boudan, jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, moon pies, King Cake, Mardi Gras Margaritas, dips and chips. We are planning on playing Mardi Gras related jazz, zydeco and dance music during the event. a song every Mardi Gras celebration should have is Mardi Gras Mambo by Buckwheat Zydeco

You know about Maui vacation rentals’ gorgeous beaches and warm inviting surf, sunset mai-tais looking out over the waves, tropical rainforests alive with brilliant colors and sounds. But for the trip of your life, check out the exciting road to Hana on Maui’s eastern shore. this is a very long trip in terms of time (rather than miles), largely because of over five hundred sharp curves and over fifty one-lane bridges on the route. also, there are some wonderful attractions to stop and see along the way, so be sure to leave your Maui condo rentals early in the morning in order to have the entire day for it. one of the nicest attractions en route is the Ke’anae Peninsula which is well worth a stop, especially for the breathtaking vista of the peninsula with its fields of taro from the lookout point above the town. there are some great parks to see on the way too, such as Pua’aka’a State Wayside Park with a beautiful waterfall, and Wai’anapanapa State Park with its black sand beach and lava tube, which is a great photo opportunity looking out the tube to the sea. You may even see some sea turtles swim by

Usually the trip to the town of Hana takes about half a day, so you will probably arrive at lunch-time. the Hotel Hana-Maui has great food in a beautiful natural setting; the Hana Ranch Restaurant is also recommended, especially if you are in a hurry. after lunch, check out the Hana Coast Gallery, which is one of the best art galleries in Hawaii. another Hana adventure for the whole family is the 3-mile hike to Fagan’s Cross, located high on the hill above Hana with breathtaking views of the harbor and coast around Hana; and Hookipa beach, which is famous for windsurfing. Leaving Hana for the south you should visit Hamoa Beach, which is one of the most spectacular in Maui. At Kipahulu, visit Haleakala National Park with the amazing Ohe’o Gulch pools, with waterfalls cascading down from one pool to the next. South of Kipahulu the road gets a bit bumpy, but it is much faster returning to Maui condos this way than going back the long way through Hana since there are far fewer hairpin turns and bridges. If you want to avoid the long drive yourself, there are guided tours available from the resort areas of Kapalua,,Honokowai, Kaanapali, Makena, and Wailea/Kihei which leave around 7 am and return around 6 pm. the cost is about $80 for adults and $50 for children, and includes box lunch, beverage, and a guide who will educate and entertain with tales and facts about the sights along the way.

Survivor Fiji is set up to be one of the better Survivors in recent memory. it is naive to think that TV shows, even as they enter into the double digits in seasons. Survivor, although a veteran of the reality TV show game, is still an evolving franchise. it is a living, breathing dynasty that only remains popular as a result of its ability to adapt. Survivor, in last season’s very popular run, showed that a diverse cast was the way to go.

The extreme diversity of last season’s cast and the ratings that it received, is the obvious reason that this season;s cast also is extremely diverse. While this season has no premise like last season’s racially separated tribes, just taking a look at the cast bios is enough to make clear that Survivor is going to run with this diversity thing as long as it makes for good television.

The BuddyTV article showcases the amazing diversity of this season’s cast. the rumor mill has definitely been swirling over what the premise or the twist will be this season and I think the diversity of the cast definitely proves some theories. the previews have made the season out to a situation of haves versus the have nots, which will turn the tables on who’s who in real life. regardless, the season is going to be incredible.

Survivor: Fiji is my most eagerly anticipated season of Survivor since the second season. it is amazing how much improved the last season was over the previous few, and this is something that gives me great hope for the future of the franchise. If it keeps it up, the show may go on forever.
